Associate Professor Carney graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1989 with distinction in Surgery. He trained as a registrar in ENT Surgery in Nottingham and undertook Fellowships in both Head & Neck Surgery and Rhinology in Adelaide and New York. In 1998, he was awarded the Gold Medal by The Royal Society of Medicine for the top candidate in the UK final fellowship examination.

He works as a Consultant and Associate Professor in ENT Surgery at Flinders University and Flinders Medical Centre. He also chairs the Flinders Clinical Research Ethics Committee. He is the lead ENT Surgeon in the Voice Clinic, Joint Head and Neck Clinic and Combined Rhinology Clinic and Head of the ENT Unit at FMC. This currently makes him the youngest Head of ENT in South Australia. He has over 100 publications in scientific journals and has been a faculty member at over 30 international meetings. He is the author of 3 chapters in the new 5-volume ENT textbook "Scott-Brown's Otolaryngology" and has his biography published in “Who’s Who in the World” since 2001. In 2007, he was awarded one of 10 "Star Reviewer" ribbon by the American Academy of Otolaryngology for his work with their Journal "Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery". He is also on the International Editorial Board of the UK Journal "Clinical Otolarygology" and is currently Secretary of the Australasian Rhinologic Society.

He has a special interest in Head & Neck Surgery and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and regularly teaches on both topics at surgical courses throughout Australia, Asia and in the UK. He is also the Secretary of the Australasian Rhinological Society. He has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures and has pioneered several new operative techniques for Head & Neck Surgery and designed instruments in conjunction with two surgical equipment manufacturers.

A/Prof Carney believes in conservative management ahead of surgery and in formulating a unique treatment plan for every patient based on both the disease itself and individual wishes &circumstances.

His recreational interests include sailing and triathlon.

He is married to Jenny with a 6-year old daughter, Charlotte and new addition Oliver.
