Rhinology (including sinus surgery)

As part of his Registrar training, A/Prof Carney worked with Professor Nick Jones (one of Europe’s leading sinus surgeons) in Nottingham. During this time, he developed his research interest in rhinology under Prof Jones supervision, receiving several research grants for his work at that time. As part of his Fellowship in New York in 1998, he received training in Rhinology and this was followed by further training in Advanced Sinus Surgery techniques under Prof P-J Wormald during his Fellowship in 1999.He has performed over 3000 sinus procedures and has taught on 12 Sinus Surgery Courses in three different continents. He was recently the Invited Keynote Speaker at a Sinus Surgery Course in Asia and will be leading another course in Thailand in 2009.

He is also an Invited International Guest Speaker at Rhinology World 2009 in Philadelphia, USA and is a regular speaker on rhinological issues to GPs and physicians across Australia.

He received his Doctorate in Medicine in 2005 for his research thesis entitled: “Studies on Allergic and Idiopathic Rhinitis” and has received two large Australian grants for research into the causes of rhinosinusitis.

He is currently the Secretary of The Australasian Rhinology Society and is a member of the group bidding to host the XXXIII International Symposium on Infection and Allergy of the Nose (ISIAN) in Adelaide in 2013.

His approach to chronic rhinosinusitis is that many patients can be managed with medical treatment without needing to resort to sinus surgery. If medical management fails, sinus surgery is required, a conservative approach will ensure that the trauma and risks from surgery are minimised, allowing patients to return to normal function as soon as possible.
